Some ideas to support your toddler to regulate their emotions

What to try

  • Think about your routine and how you can support your toddler’s understanding of their day.
  • Even with a predictable routine, your toddler may need some time to figure things out.
  • It can be tempting to do things for them, especially if you’re pressed for time.
  • Toddlers benefit when their pace is respected, and you give them support when they indicate that they need it.
  • They might find it harder to regulate their emotions if they feel under pressure, so simply giving a bit longer to get something done can help them to stay regulated.
  • Your toddler is still developing the cognitive skills they need to think about what is going to happen next and so might need a little more time to think about what you have asked them to do (especially if there is a change in routine).
  • You can show them through how you respond how to remain calm, even when you are rushing a bit!

Good to know

A fairly predictable routine will support your toddler when coping with changes as they know what will happen next. Your toddler is aware of what to expect and when, and if there is a change, this gives you the chance to help them get ready for it.
