Skin-to-skin tummy time – a soothing experience for you both
What you need
- Time and space to relax in that’s suitable for skin-to-skin time with your baby
What to try
- At a time of day that suits you, bring your baby to a cosy space for some calming skin-to-skin time.
- Your baby can be wearing a nappy, or nothing at all if that works for you.
- Be sure to have no clothing on your own chest.
- Lie on your back in a reclined position and place your baby on your chest.
- Try to engage your baby by gently singing or talking.
When doing skin-to-skin with your baby, make sure you are in a safe position. You should avoid lying flat; instead, prop yourself up on pillows or sit so that your baby’s head is higher than their feet.
Ensure you can see your baby's face and that it is turned to the side so you can make sure their nose and mouth are not being squashed.
Good to know
Be careful that you’re not feeling too tired while doing this, as the calming effects can send you to sleep.
Making eye contact will reinforce that special bond between you both and help to contribute to the relaxing moment. Your baby will feel safe in the warmth and fragrance of your skin.
