Skin-to-skin snuggles – making this part of your routine

What to try

  • Skin-to-skin time after a feed, when your baby is ready for a nap or after a bath (as long as they are warm and dry first).
  • While your baby is cosy against you, sing them one of your favourite songs or tell them a story about your day.

When doing skin-to-skin with your baby, make sure you are in a safe position: not lying flat but propped up on pillows or sitting so that your baby’s head is higher than their feet. Ensure you can see your baby's face and that it is turned to the side so you can see that their nose and mouth are not being squashed.

Good to know

There are many benefits of skin-to-skin contact, and this is something that can form part of your routine in the weeks and months after your baby is born. Being skin-to-skin with your baby can help to soothe them, and you, so take time to enjoy some bare skin cuddles when it works for both of you.
