What to try
- Go to the park and let your toddler choose where they’d like to play.
- As they climb on park equipment, make simple comments about what they’re doing, “Oh you’re on the climbing frame now.”
- You could also use ‘on’ and ‘in’ to make suggestions, “Can you get in the playhouse?”
- If the equipment is suitable, you could climb a bit yourself and comment, “Look, I’m on the beam.”
Good to know
By making a point of saying, really clearly, when you notice your toddler is on or in something it will help them to make a connection between what they’re experiencing and the quite complicated concepts of on and in, building up their understanding over time.
