In and on – take a trip to the park for some language learning fun

What to try

  • Go to the park and let your toddler choose where they’d like to play.
  • As they climb on park equipment, make simple comments about what they’re doing, “Oh you’re on the climbing frame now.”
  • You could also use ‘on’ and ‘in’ to make suggestions, “Can you get in the playhouse?”
  • If the equipment is suitable, you could climb a bit yourself and comment, “Look, I’m on the beam.”

Good to know

By making a point of saying, really clearly, when you notice your toddler is on or in something it will help them to make a connection between what they’re experiencing and the quite complicated concepts of on and in, building up their understanding over time.
