Sensory foot walk – exploring speed and texture with bare feet

What you need

  • Set up a sensory walk, either indoors or outdoors.
  • Find something squishy, like a cushion or pillow.
  • Look for other textures, like a rough towel, a soft dressing gown or a wet flannel.
  • Outdoors you could use a bowl of water, a tray with leaves in, mud or sand.

What to do

  1. Once you have collected your items, make a trail for your toddler to walk over.
  2. Take off footwear and allow your toddler to walk barefoot.

Stay close to your toddler and offer support. Some of the textures may be slippery so they might need to hold your hand.

Good to know

Your toddler might adjust their speed when exploring different textures. They may slowly move through some yet try to get off others more quickly.

If you spread the textures out, your toddler may speed up when travelling from one to another.
