Self-feeding hints and tips – although we still can’t guarantee it won’t be a messy mealtime!

What to try 

  • Make sure that your toddler is properly supported in their chair, with their feet and back resting comfortably. When the body is fully supported, your toddler can concentrate on using their arms to eat, with no other physical distractions. 
  • Provide foods that will stick to the spoon. Mashed foods, porridge, yoghurt, chilli, and Bolognese, are good examples. 
  • Shorter, thicker spoons should be better for your toddler to control. 
  • Explore different spoons. Plastic ones are usually lighter and softer on the gums. Some spoons have a thin handle, which may be trickier to hold onto. 
  • Take your time and give your toddler lots of practice.
