Scoop ball: a simple game to encourage kneeling

What you need

  • A handful of balls (tennis ball size)
  • A washing basket or other container

What to try

  1. Drop all the balls onto the floor.
  2. Encourage your toddler to pick the balls up and place them into the basket as quickly as they can.
  3. Show them how to do this by demonstrating to them how you can do it on your knees (if possible).

Good to know

When encouraging your toddler to walk on their knees, bear in mind the types of clothes they are wearing and the flooring they’re on.

Walking on knees can become painful if their knees are bare, especially if your toddler is knee walking on a carpet or a hard outdoor surface. Let them decide how long they stay on their knees for.

Not all toddlers walk on their knees, so don’t worry if they miss this stage.
