Say a little more – adding to your toddler’s single words and gestures
What to try
- When your toddler uses a single word, or a word and gesture to tell you something – respond by saying what you think they meant.
- For example, if they watch as Mummy leaves for work and say, “Mummy,” add to it with, “Mummy’s going to work.”
- Do the same when your toddler makes a choice (they might do this by pointing or saying a single word). Perhaps say, “Oh you want the blue one not the green.”
During your day-to-day routine give your toddler different choices. For example:
- The choice of two tops
- Allow them to pick between two snacks
- What toys they’d like to play with
