Sandcastles – encourage the use of a preferred hand
What you need
- Sand
- Bucket
- Spade
What to do
- Show your child how to put sand into the bucket.
- Let them fill the bucket without your help.
- If the bucket tips, suggest they hold the bucket with one hand as they fill it with the other.
- When the bucket is full, show them how to tap the sand down, and tip the bucket over.
Good to know
Activities that need one hand to hold something steady, while the other moves are useful for encouraging use of a preferred hand. This includes making sandcastles and also things like stirring a mixture or opening a bottle or tub.
