‘Round and Round the Garden’ – supporting interaction with rhymes and songs

What to do

  • Say the rhyme, ‘Round and Round the Garden’ with your baby.
  • As you say, “round and round the garden”, gently run your finger round your baby’s hand.
  • Walk steps with your fingers up your baby’s arm and then give them a gentle tickle on their tummy.
  • When you have finished saying the rhyme, pause and see if your baby responds to indicate they would like you to say it again.

Good to know

Traditional rhymes and songs can be a great way to interact with your baby. A rhyme that uses a pattern of touch will help your baby to tune into the rhythm of the words you say.

Round and round the garden like a teddy bear,

One step, two steps, tickle you under there.
