Pull and push sensory tubes – create a simple activity using three items

What you need

  • A kitchen roll tube
  • Ribbons
  • Straws

What to do

  1. When you have an empty kitchen roll, poke a few holes in the tube.
  2. Find some ribbon, cut it into a few lengths and thread the multiple pieces through the holes.
  3. Tie a knot at each end of the ribbon to help prevent them from being pulled through the tube.
  4. Weave some straws through other holes and then pass the tube to your baby to explore.
  5. They might not know what to do with it, so you can show them how to pull the ribbon and push the straws.
  6. The straws will almost certainly come out and you might find your baby tries to re-insert them.
  7. Give them time to have a go at this before stepping in to help.

Good to know

Letting your toddler explore different objects and materials will help them see what happens to them when they use their hands in different ways.

They might squash objects and look at what has happened as they to understand the force they can use when handling different objects.
