Welcome to the My First Five Years Blog. Here you will find all sorts of information, ideas and activities that will help you to support your child.
Play this little game when your baby is on your knee or lying on their back.
Enjoy some face-to-face time with your baby during some downtime. Babies are naturally curious and like seeing what is going on around them. Chat with your baby when they are on your knees, looking at your face. While sitting with you, your baby will most likely move their arms and legs. Allow your baby time to explore you if they try to reach for your face, hair, or clothing.
When your baby is playing on their tummy, encourage them to look up and lift their head and arms by singing to them.
During nappy changing time, show your baby what you are doing and using. Exaggerate your movements, so when you take off the nappy and place it in the bin, show your baby the nappy and how you move it to one side.
Your baby is now becoming more aware of their feet, and what they can do with them. You could sing a song with your baby whilst they are lying on their back Actions songs are great for this, such as pat-a-cake. However, instead of touching their hands as you sing, you could gently touch their feet.
Taking your baby out for a walk is a wonderful way for them to look at lots of interesting things. If this is the first time your baby has been outside keep the walk short and walk as far as you feel comfortable.
What you need
When your baby is taking part in tummy time, place different objects that they may show interest in on the mat. This could be shiny or different textured toys or even include musical toys that you can move and make sounds with.
