Welcome to the My First Five Years Blog. Here you will find all sorts of information, ideas and activities that will help you to support your child.
Provide lots of opportunities for your baby to twist when they are playing on their back. Place a toy to one side of your baby, just out of reach. Encourage your baby to reach for it. If they stretch far enough, their shoulder should twist and lift enough to cause a shift in their centre of gravity, bringing your baby to their front.

While your baby is enjoying tummy time, find a fabric book, or a mirror book for them to look at. Gently place the book by their arms and open a page. Talk with your baby about what you can see on the pages. You might observe your baby lifting their body with their arms in an attempt to see the book more clearly.
To encourage your baby to roll when engaged in tummy time, place toys or objects that they are interested in near them on the floor, but just out of their reach. When you observe your baby rolling towards items, encourage them using smiles, praise, and clapping.
Lie your baby on their back in a comfy place. Put some music on, this can be anything that both you and your baby will enjoy listening to. When the music starts, sit so that you are looking directly at your baby. Join in with the music by smiling, dancing, swaying, singing, or in any way that is your baby may find entertaining. Watch to see whether your baby moves their body in response to the music and your moves.
Find a large, light ball, like a beachball or a softball. Lie your baby on their back and place the ball on their tummy. Observe to see if your baby can move the ball with their feet. Practising the action of moving a ball with their feet may encourage them to move their feet toward their mouth.
