Open, close them – a simple song to inspire fine motor skills
What to do
- When your baby is lying on their back, perhaps playing or having their nappy changed, sing ‘Open, close them’.
- While you sing “Open,” open and stretch out your fingers.
- While you sing “Close,” clench your fingers into your palms.
- Notice how your baby watches your hands open and close, and see what movements they make with their own hands as you do so.
Good to know
Over time, your baby will learn to connect the words and actions when they watch you gesturing while you speak. They'll eventually start to copy your actions as you sing the song.
Open, close them.
Open, close them – open close them,
Lay them in your lap.
Open, close them – open close them,
Give a little clap.
