One finger, one thumb keep moving – use a rhyme to develop awareness and control of fingers

What to do

  • Sit or stand where your child can see you so they can copy your actions.
  • Sing ‘One Finger One Thumb’ and move your finger and thumb as you sing.
  • Start by moving your thumb and index finger, then repeat the words but move your thumb and another finger.

The words are;

One finger, one thumb keep moving.

One finger, one thumb keep moving,

One finger, one thumb keep moving we’ll all be merry and bright.

Good to know

Being able to do things such as moving their fingers into position to put gloves on, or using their fingers to move and position objects, involves physical skills and body awareness.

Finger rhymes and songs are a really good way to develop this control and awareness. Try to find time for rhymes and songs as part of your everyday routine.
