New stories and old – visit the library for some fresh ideas

What to do

  • Visit the library.
  • If you’re not already a member, look on your local council website to find your nearest library. When you first visit take with you anything you need to join (you can often join online but might need to take proof of address the first time you visit to complete your application).
  • Find the children’s section and give your toddler lots of time to look at the books, at first they might be quite excited and get lots of books of the shelves.
  • Chat about the books with them and encourage them to think about which they would like to borrow.

Good to know

If you haven’t visited the library before, your toddler might find the idea of borrowing books and bringing them back confusing. Don’t worry if they have a favourite that they are reluctant to return to the library, many children find a book they love that they want to keep borrowing!

Most libraries have events for children, such as storytimes or song and rhyme sessions. You could plan your visit to include one of these.
