New experiences are part of life – help develop your toddler’s independence by being there to support them
What to try
- Think about the variety of experiences that your toddler has. Having a predictable routine helps them to feel secure, but new and different experiences can also help them to learn that even if they feel a little unsure at first, new things are often interesting and fun.
- Plan a new experience; this can be something small like a trip to a different park or shop, or a bigger adventure like getting the bus or train to somewhere new.
- Talk to your toddler about what will happen before you leave, letting them know they will see some new things.
- On the trip, talk about the things that you notice and give your toddler time to look at what is happening around them.
- Your toddler might need more time than usual to process things in a new place. If they seem unsure, respond to them and offer reassurance, let them stay close to you and explore the new place together.
Good to know
Your toddler will be doing lots of things for the first time and if they seem a little unsure in new situations don’t worry, as this can help them to develop independence and confidence. Simply stay close and reassure them that they are safe with you, and talk about how you feel in new places.
