Show how you put on shoes to help them understand and recreate the process

What to do

  1. Sit next to your toddler when putting on your shoes.
  2. Talk about each step of the process. This helps create a sequence of events in their memory that they can use next time they have a go at putting on their shoes.
  3. Make this a regular thing. The more your toddler watches you, the better the sequence of how to put shoes on will be mapped out in their memory, and they can replay it while they try to put their own shoes on.
  4. Encourage them to copy or help you. Perhaps ask them to help you to wiggle your foot inside the shoe or pull your shoe on at the back.
