Make a simple toy for your baby to develop their strength

What you need

  • A sock
  • Flour

What to do

  1. Fill a sock with a small amount of flour.
  2. Tie it at the top to close the opening.
  3. Let your baby explore it!
  4. If they aren’t too sure to start with, show them how to play with the sock by squishing and squeezing it yourself.

Always supervise your baby when they are playing, as they will explore the items with their mouth. The flour may escape a little while you play, so make sure you’re in a space which can be cleaned easily.

Good to know

Building up the strength in your baby’s hands will help them to develop the fine motor skills needed to turn pages in books. So, where you can, encourage your baby to press, squeeze and squash objects during their play to give their fingers a range of challenges. Dough or clay is a wonderful resource for this!
