Looking and feeling – helping your baby explore their hands using their senses
What to try
- If you notice your baby looking at their hands, gently bring attention to them, “Yes, it’s your hands!” and use your finger to stroke them or tickle their fingers.
- You can describe what is happening as you play, “I will softly stroke your hand, now I'm touching your fingers. Look, they wiggled!”
Good to know
Your baby will feel your touch and see your action, allowing them to connect visual information to the feelings they are experiencing through their other senses. You can repeat this using soft, fluffy fabrics, feathers or even damp sponges to touch your baby’s hand – this will widen the sensations your baby experiences.
