What am I hiding? Ways to inspire curiosity and surprise!
What you need
- Objects and toys that your baby is familiar with
What to try
- Lay the toys out behind your back and sing a song – you can make up the tune and sing words such as, “What’s behind my back? What’s behind my back? Shall we have a little look at what’s behind my back?”
- Slowly turn around, building anticipation. You could say, “Hmm, what can I see? Oh yes, I have got...”
- Show your baby what you’ve found and encourage them to tell you what it is.
- Respond to what they say with something like, “Yes, that’s right, it’s your dummy!”
- You could try and extend the chat with your baby by talking about the objects a little more.
Good to know
Repeat this game if your baby enjoys playing it. They’ll gain so much from hearing the same words and it will help them to not only say isolated words but also to join in with the song and phrases you use.
