Learn about social gestures when you visit family and friends

What to try 

• When you meet friends or family, include your baby in your greetings and farewells.  
• Let your baby see the gestures you use when you meet people you know well and give them time so they can copy you if they want to.  
• Encourage them to join in with a wave or blowing a kiss at the end of a video call. 
• Notice if your baby is watching your gestures closely and encourage them to join in. For example, you might notice that your baby has been watching a high five closely and that they have a go if someone holds a hand out towards them. 

Good to know 

Over time, as you encourage and respond positively to your baby copying, they’ll begin to make these gestures themselves.
