Learning about emotions – starting young will support life-long understanding
What to do
Your toddler will feel upset, angry and frustrated at times.
Talk about how you think they’re feeling, for example, “You’re angry because you can’t have a biscuit now.”
Don’t feel you need to 'swerve’ negative feelings – you can help your toddler by acknowledging how they feel, and being calm so they know they are safe.
Perhaps rather than saying, “You’re ok,” or “It’s not that bad,” you could say, “You’re safe, I’m here,” and remind them, “Being angry because that didn’t work is ok. We all feel angry sometimes.”
