Ice! A great first science lesson in understanding cause and effect 

What you need 

• Small plastic toys, such as animals or blocks 
• An oven tray 
• Water 
• A freezer 

What to do 

1. Place the water and small toys in an oven tray. 
2. Carefully move to the freezer and leave it there until the tray is a large block of ice.  
3. Experiment together with unusual ways to try and free the animals.  
4. You could use hot water, chilly water, sand, salt, spoons, hammers and much more!  
5. This is a wonderful way to explore cause and effect in a fun and engaging way.
