Encourage your toddler to stretch to reach their toys

What you need

  • A table placed against a wall
  • A large toy, such as a car garage, doll house, kitchen or anything that might interest your toddler and encourage them to reach and stretch up
  • Cars, dolls or other toys that can be played with alongside the large toy

What to do

  1. Pop the large toy on the tabletop.
  2. Put the other toys on top of the large toy, or as high up as your toddler can reach.
  3. Sit close to your toddler while they play.
  4. Narrate your toddler’s play and say things like, “I can see you trying to reach for teddy, take your time, I like the way you are stretching.”
  5. Show your toddler how you use your tiptoes to reach for toys at the far end of the table.
