Here comes the ball – can your baby grab it as it rolls towards them?

What you need

  • A ball
  • A clear, safe space on the floor
  • Cushions or pillows (optional)

What to do

  1. When your baby is sitting upright, sit so that you are facing them. If your baby needs support when sitting, you might want to pad cushions around them, or play when another person can sit holding your baby.
  2. Build anticipation by counting down before you roll – for example, count “3…2…1…go!” just as you are about to push the ball.
  3. Gently roll a ball towards your baby.
  4. Watch as your baby follows the ball with their eyes and makes attempts to grab, touch or push it.

While your baby is still learning to sit upright, place some cushions or pillows around them to ensure they will be safe if they topple over.
