Helping your toddler to recognise their interests – play at home and talk about them

What to do

  1. Invite your toddler to choose what they want to play with.
  2. Watch to see what they get out, or ask you to get.
  3. Follow their lead as they choose toys or suggest an activity.
  4. Play with your toddler and encourage them to choose how you will play.
  5. Talk about the things you’re doing together and when you have finished have a chat about what you have been playing.

Good to know

Chatting with your toddler about the games you play will help them to think about the things that they enjoy doing. They may be able to draw back on their memories of what they like to play with when they are playing with other children outside of your home.
