Give baby time to play – their babbling sounds are on the way

What you need 

• Time for your baby to explore toys while lying on their back (toys like a hanging mobile or a baby gym would be ideal) 

What to try 

• Give your baby time to explore the toys as they dangle above their head. 
• Listen to the sounds your baby makes. 
• If you notice lots of babbling, take note of what is interesting to them and the sounds they use. This is your baby talking to themselves and narrating their play. 
• The next time they use the toy, listen again to hear if they use the same sounds. 
• Try copying their babbles; hearing you repeat their sounds may excite your baby and encourage them to carry on talking.  

Don’t hang a mobile or other toys over your baby’s sleep space, and always stay with them if they are playing under a mobile or baby gym.
