Getting dressed – lifting a leg when putting clothes and shoes on
What to try
- When you are going out and your toddler puts their shoes on, try to encourage them to stand on one leg while they lift the other foot into a shoe.
- At bedtime or after bathtime, encourage your toddler to stand on one leg when putting on pyjamas.
- In the morning, support your toddler to lift one leg at a time when putting on underwear, trousers, leggings, shorts, skirts, tights or socks. You might choose to start with one item of clothing to begin with and gradually introduce more when you feel they’re ready.
In each of these examples, your toddler may need to hold onto you, or some type of support while they build in strength and confidence.
