Gesture treasure hunt – sometimes body language is best

What you need

  • Open space to explore – such as a park

What to try

  • When out for a walk, turn it into a gesture treasure hunt activity.
  • Point out something you see. Say to your baby, “I can see some birds flying in the sky. Can you see any too?” Wait for your baby to notice the birds and point to them.
  • If they don’t point, you could point again to show them where they are, and later on point out another feature you see.
  • When your baby does find something, you can both clap, or give each other a thumbs up or high five for great spotting skills!

Good to know

At times, ask your baby to look for something that isn’t there. You could say, “I can’t see any ducks,” while shaking your head, then say “Can you?” Your baby might use a gesture to tell you that they can or can’t see the ducks.
