Form an awareness of space – with an obstacle course

What you need

  • Chairs
  • Fabric
  • Cushions
  • Space

What to try

  • Create tunnels with fabric draped over chairs.
  • Place cushions on the floor to crawl over.
  • Provide some space to run.
  • If you have time, cut some strips of fabric and dangle them over the start of a tunnel. Your toddler may use their arms to try and move the fabric out of their way.

Good to know

Your toddler is learning about how their body moves in relation to the space around them. Their brain receives messages from sensory receptors in the muscles and joints and this tells them how to move their body and body parts.

As your toddler navigates their way through the course, they will need to make decisions as to where to place their arms and legs. A little gentle push of the feet could help boost them through the tunnel, and careful placement of their arms may help them to climb over some cushions.
