Foot spa – a gentle and simple way to start baby massage

Around this time, you may wish to explore baby massage. There are many classes which teach this skill, and for some families they are a real joy. We also know that for some babies (and parents), attending such a busy, structured class at this stage just doesn’t feel right. Whichever camp you find yourself in, it’s still possible to try some simple, gentle baby massage at home.

What to try

  1. Ensure your baby is relaxed and comfortable lying on a blanket or towel. It's nice to start the session by asking your baby if they are ready for a massage; some parents like to use the same phrase each time.
  2. Begin with one foot, slightly raised and held gently in both of your hands.
  3. Use your thumbs to softly stroke upwards from heel to toes, around six times, and then use the pads of your thumbs to gently press along the sole of your baby’s foot from side to side.
  4. Move to supporting their heel with one hand and use the other to stroke over the top of their foot, then gently run a finger or thumb down over the top of each toe one by one.
  5. Move to the other foot and repeat each step.

Remember, never force your baby’s limbs into new positions or use too much pressure in baby massage. Always support your baby’s wrists and ankles while you massage.

Good to know

Keep your strokes light and follow your baby’s lead, they will let you know if they have had enough. Your baby might show preferences for one type of touch or become overstimulated quickly, so might not enjoy massage for long. It is always okay to stop or change what you’re doing based on your baby’s likes and dislikes.
