Find some artwork, what will you see?

What to try

  • Visit an art gallery, a museum or a shop that sells artwork, posters or greeting cards. You might be able to find suggestions for child-friendly gallery spaces and museums on local parenting groups.
  • Choose a piece of art to look at with your toddler when you get there.
  • As you describe what you notice, allow your toddler to join in by looking for details.
  • You might say, “I can see a zebra, I wonder if there’s a lion too?”
  • Give your toddler plenty of time to look at the artwork. This might be a completely new experience for them, and they might need to take in their environment for a little while before they can focus on smaller details.

Good to know

If you can’t get out, or the thought of going to a gallery or museum is just not for you, there are great websites to visit, such as “Art Gallery”, where you can see art collections online. You can choose a piece of artwork to look at with your toddler and talk about what you see from the comfort of home.
