Find a book that reflects your life – your toddler will be much more engaged in it

What you need

  • Relatable picture books

What to try

  • Read books that reflect your toddler's interests, or what is going on in their life.
  • Have a few books on a shelf or in a basket where your toddler can reach them so that sometimes they can choose to look at a book or ask you to read a story when they are playing.
  • Visit a library to look for books that relate to your toddler’s life right now.

Good to know

Having books that relate to events in your toddler's life is great.

You might also want to have books that expand their world – so maybe stories about children who have different experiences, or books about the things that interest your toddler.

It might be that they have a life event happening soon, if so, see if you can find a story to reflect it.

Your toddler is more likely to engage with and remember the book if they are interested in it.
