Make a busy bag for when your toddler has to sit for a while

What you need

  • Fidget toys, like Pop Its
  • A small bag
  • A favourite book
  • A few small toys with little bags they can be stored in

What to do

  • Get a small bag and make your toddler a ‘busy bag’ for trips or times when they need to wait, maybe when you go out for a meal, or you’re waiting for an appointment.
  • Find a few items to keep in the busy bag – this could include a story, a few favourite toys, each with their own small bag for your toddler to take them out of and put back in, and a fidget toy – for example, a Pop It.
  • Your toddler can have the bag and choose what they’d like to play with, they might enjoy putting the toys in the smaller bags, or might like pushing the dots on the fidget toy.

Make sure anything you give to your toddler to play with is suitable; although they probably don’t put things in their mouth as often now, they might do sometimes, so continue to check the toys you give them.

Good to know

Fidget toys are great for encouraging your toddler to use one finger accurately to push. Opening the bag and selecting what to play with will support the development of their hands and fingers, so is great for fine motor control.
