Dropping a beat – making music by dropping objects

Collect a variety of (non-breakable) containers made of different materials. Cardboard boxes, metal pans of different sizes and plastic storage boxes are all great options. With your baby, experiment with dropping balls or small toys into the containers. Notice what kind of sound it makes and encourage your baby to repeat the dropping action over any sounds they really enjoy! Add another layer of interest by putting different bases in some of the containers – plastic bags, fabric, tin foil and even water (as long as you have a towel nearby!) will all give different sounds as your object lands.
