Bubble, bubble, STOMP! A new way to play with bubbles – and learn new skills

What you need

  • Bubble mixture and a bubble wand

What to do

  • In a clear area, with nothing for your toddler to trip over, gently blow some bubbles low to the ground. You may need to lie on your tummy to do this.
  • Ask your toddler to pop the bubbles... but only using their feet!
  • Let your toddler experiment with how to do this; they might stomp by lifting one foot and squashing a bubble, or choose to lie down and wave their feet in the air. There is no right answer, but if they don’t choose to stomp you can join in and show them how to lift one foot at a time to pop bubbles.

Avoid using bubble mixture on smooth floors as it can make them slippery. Place a towel on the floor first or do this activity on carpet or even outside instead.

Good to know

If you don’t have bubble mixture, or want to avoid possible mess, you can play this activity by placing small toys or stickers around the floor and challenging your toddler to ‘squash’ each one with one foot. You can even join in to make this a race, if your toddler prefers to play against someone.

By making it into a game, you are helping your toddler develop the muscles, and balance, needed to lift one foot at a time which they can use to help them confidently climb stairs in the future.
