What to try
- Use books to revisit concepts that your toddler has got muddled up. For example, if they thought a penguin was a fish, look at a bird book together; you could say why you understand why they thought this water-loving bird was a fish instead!
- Search online together for some instant child-friendly facts.
- Your toddler’s toys can also be used to share misunderstood information. If you have any toys that relate to a tricky topic, when you play together, pretend the toys are having your conversation. The toys can then be used to deliver information in a fun way. So, say your toddler calls a tractor a lorry, you could find both of these in toy form and make a story about the day the tractor finds out it’s not a lorry.
Good to know
Revisiting information about things helps to consolidate it in your toddler’s mind. Children love information and facts, and if you don’t have access to the books you need at home, your local library should have plenty.
