What to try
- Keep one or two small books in your toddler's bag, in the car or in the bottom of the buggy.
- Give your toddler a book to look at if they’re getting restless while at friends’ houses, on journeys or in cafés. You might choose a book with interactive elements, or with pictures that link to what you’re doing, to keep their interest a little longer.
- Let your toddler explore the book however they want while you’re out and about; your hands may be busy with other things, so encourage your toddler to try turning pages themselves instead of asking you to help.
- Having access to books while away from home will provide a lot more opportunities for your toddler to practise turning pages, and give them experience of doing so in different contexts helping to embed the skill.
