Use books to talk about feelings

What to do

  1. Support your toddler’s understanding of feelings and emotions by sharing a picture book such as Feelings by Libby Walden. This book is a splendid example of how you could start a conversation about how different situations and occurrences can cause us to feel certain emotions.
  2. While reading together, use language around feelings and emotions.
  3. Explain how you feel; you might choose an emotion and talk about when you’ve felt it. For example, “I felt happy when I saw you this morning,” or “I felt brave when we walked through the dark woods this weekend.”
  4. Hearing you talk about your feelings will help your toddler to express how they are feeling as they grow.
