Use books to talk about feelings
What to do
- Support your toddler’s understanding of feelings and emotions by sharing a picture book such as Feelings by Libby Walden. This book is a splendid example of how you could start a conversation about how different situations and occurrences can cause us to feel certain emotions.
- While reading together, use language around feelings and emotions.
- Explain how you feel; you might choose an emotion and talk about when you’ve felt it. For example, “I felt happy when I saw you this morning,” or “I felt brave when we walked through the dark woods this weekend.”
- Hearing you talk about your feelings will help your toddler to express how they are feeling as they grow.
