Welcome to the My First Five Years Blog. Here you will find all sorts of information, ideas and activities that will help you to support your child.
Set up a picnic by placing a piece of fabric on the floor and setting up plates and snacks. Say to your baby that you are having a picnic and you would like them to put food on the plates. Point to a plate and say, “What food are we putting here?” If your baby doesn’t look at the plate, lift it a give it a jiggle to attract their attention. You could always say, “This plate needs food, what could go on there?”
What you need
Provide your baby with stacking cups or toys. Give your baby time to explore the toys and move them around. Stacking toys are designed to encourage your baby to pick up and place objects in a particular place. This is a difficult task as your baby will have to coordinate numerous actions while moving and positioning objects but don’t worry, you are looking for purposeful movements of objects, regardless of where the toy ends up in this activity.
Building up the strength in your baby’s hands will help them to develop the fine motor skills needed to turn pages in books. Encourage your baby to press, squeeze and squash objects during their play to give their fingers a range of challenges. Dough or clay is a wonderful resource for this, but if you aren’t in a place to handle the mess you can try filling a sock with a small amount of flour and letting your baby explore this. It’s a great texture for squeezing and squidging! Always supervise your baby when they are playing, as they will explore the items with their mouth.
